Joel L.  McVey
Joel McVey age 88, of Marshalltown, entered into eternal life, Sunday, March 11, 2012, at Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, March 15, 2012, at St. Henry Catholic Church in Marshalltown with Father Don Czapla and Father Tom Braak officiating. Lunch will be served immediately following the church service. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Frank Lewis Glick Post #46. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M., Wednesday, March 14, with a Vigil Service to begin at 6:30 P.M. at Pursel Davis Funeral and Cremation Care. Memorial donations in honor of Joel may be directed to St. Henry Catholic Church or Iowa River Hospice. Online condolences may be sent to www.vogelfuneralhomes.com.
Joel McVey was born on September 13, 1923 in Ottumwa, Iowa, the son of George G. and Lillie May McVey. He graduated from Ottumwa High School. Joel loved to fish and hunt. Joel served in the US Army as a Tech Sgt. in World War II from 1943 to 1946, both in the European and Asiatic Pacific Theaters of Command.
On May 10, 1947 he married Frances M. Katch of Lovilia, Iowa at St. Peters Church in Lovilia.
From 1946 to 1952 he worked as an insurance adjustor and manager for Underwriters Adjusting Co. in Cedar Rapids. He worked as a special agent and state manager for New Hampshire Ins. Co. in Cedar Rapids from 1952 to 1967. He moved to Marshalltown, Iowa in 1967 where he was a partner in Brennecke-Grossman Ins. Agency. He later formed his own agency, McVey-Brennecke Ins., which he later sold to Hawkeye Bank where he served as manager and Vice-President of Insurance until his retirement in 1985.
Joel was a life member of the Knights of Columbus of Marshalltown, and had been active in the YMCA, Noon Optimist, Elmwood Country Club where he served on the board, was Chief Umpire of Major Little League, and a member of St. Henry Catholic Church.
Joel will be missed by his 2 daughters, Jo (Gary) Eggers of Los Altos, CA, Stephanie McVey of Fruitland, Idaho, 2 sons, Mark (Vickie) McVey of Marshalltown, Drew (Cindy) McVey of Brookfield, Wisconsin, 8 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild.
In eternal life Joel joins Frances, his loving wife of 61 years, his parents, brothers, Wilford and George, and sister Lavelle.
