Bob was born January 2, 1921 to Paul and Pearl (Chambers) Fitzgerald in Springfield, IL. Bob was united in marriage to Alice M. Newby at the Little brown Church on September 14, 1946. A well respected area farmer for many years, Bob knew few strangers and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Bob was very proud to be a veteran of his country. He served honorably in the United States Army from December 1942 to January 1946, fighting in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. Bob received recognition and award from Governor Terry Brandstad for hours of volunteer services at the Iowa Veterans Home. He was a longtime member of the Iowa River church of the Brethren, missing few services in over 70 years. Bob lived life to the fullest and was happiest spending time with family and friends, helping others,
sharing war stories with other World War II veterans, and working in his garden. He loved nature, growing food, and giving most of it away.

Bob will be missed by his loving wife of 65 years, Alice, daughter, Vicki (Jerry) Miller of Ankeny, IA, two granddaughters, Tara (Adam Palmiotto) Widmer, Megan (Ryan) Kennedy, two great grandchildren, Katelyn and Tanner Kennedy, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and five sisters.
