Dorothy Meyers, 86, passed away on May 16, 2012, at Oakview Nursing Home in Conrad, Iowa.

Dorothy was born on July 9, 1925, in Luverne, Minnesota to King and Lillian Galbreath. She grew up in Traer, Iowa, where she graduated from high school. She studied at the University of Dubuque, in Dubuque, Iowa. She was united in marriage to F. Kent Meyers on December 17, 1948, in Waterloo, Iowa. They later divorced. During her career, she worked at a radio station in Saginaw, Michigan; for John Deere, in Waterloo, Iowa; and for the Spokesman Press, in Grundy Center, Iowa, where she was Editor of the Collector’s News. During her lifetime, she resided in Traer, Iowa; Grundy Center, Iowa; Lake City, Minnesota; Woodland Hills, California; Menomonie, Wisconsin; and Grinnell, Iowa.

After retirement in 1985, she devoted her time to mentoring and tutoring, and to her real passions for music, poetry, writing and working on environmental causes. In Lake City she was a member of the executive board and chief publicist for Communities United for Responsible Energy. She enjoyed performing with the Chamber Singers and Quintessence. In Grinnell she edited the Mayflower Log and was a leader in the organization of Mayflower’s environmental Green Committee. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Tuesday Club, Poetry Club, PI Rho Lambda Sorority, and P.E.O. (Chapter NF in Grinnell, Iowa).

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, King and Lillian Galbreath; and by a brother, Dale Galbreath.

Dorothy is survived by two daughters; Mary Gayle Stowe (Jack) of Gladbrook, and Susan Ward (Michael) of Waterloo; three grandchildren; Jennifer Raghavan of West Branch, Forrest Stowe (Kara) of Ames and Kent Stowe (Emily) of Waterloo; and two great-grandchildren.

A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, May 26, 2012, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. in the Carman Center (on the second floor of the Health Center) at Mayflower in Grinnell, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Mayflower Homes Foundation. The family extends its gratitude to Grinnell Hospice, Iowa Hospice, the staff at Oakview Nursing Home in Conrad, and the Mayflower Community in Grinnell for their support during her final days.
